First Northern Lights LCO2 carrier gets tanks

Northern Lights JV’s first LNG-powered liquefied CO2 carrier has received two LCO2 tanks as construction on the vessel continues to progress in China.

According to a statement by China’s Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC), these two type C LCO2 tanks are the first such tanks in the world.

Each of the installed tanks has a capacity of 3,750 cbm for a total of 7,500 cbm.

China’s Jiangsu Watts Energy & Engineering built these two tanks and will also provide sets of tanks for the three other Northern Lights JV’s LCO2 carriers, Watts Energy said in a separate statement.

Norway’s Northern Lights, the joint venture consisting of Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, recently signed a charter deal with Bernhard Schulte for a new LNG-powered CO2 carrier.

The 7,500-cbm liquefied CO2 ship will be the fourth in line to the sister ships currently under construction at Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore (DSOC).

A spokesperson for Northern Lights previously told LNG Prime that the “first two ship contracts were awarded to DSIC but they are built by DSOC as a contractor.”

All of the vessels will have LNG dual-fuel propulsion.

Besides LNG power, the 130 meters long vessels will feature a wind-assisted propulsion system and air lubrication in order to reduce carbon intensity.

The JV will take delivery of the first two LNG-powered ships in 2024, the third vessel in 2025, while the fourth will be delivered in 2026.
