Another LNG-fueled containership joins CMA CGM’s fleet

French shipping giant CMA CGM has welcomed another LNG-powered containership in its fleet.

Chinese shipbuilder Hudong-Zhonghua has on Wednesday hosted a naming ceremony for the 13,000-teu LNG-powered containership, CMA CGM Buzios.

This is the second of six 13,000-teu LNG-powered containerships Hudong-Zhonghua is building for French shipping giant CMA CGM.

Hudong-Zhonghua will officially deliver the newbuild to CMA CGM on Friday.

In December, Hudong-Zhonghua delivered the first vessel in this batch, CMA CGM Bahia, and recently launched the fifth vessel, CMA CGM Belem.

Hudong-Zhonghua plans to deliver the remaining four ships later this year, and all off the six vessels will work on the South American route.

The shipbuilder and Jiangnan Shipyard are each building six LNG-powered ships for CMA CGM as part of a deal revealed in April 2021, while the six vessels at Jiangnan have a capacity of 15,000 units.

Moreover, the new LNG-powered vessel features GTT’s Mark III containment system and the CMD-WinGD 9X92DF-2.0 iCER main engine, Hudong-Zhonghua said.

CMA CGM is one of the world’s largest backers of LNG as fuel for vessels.

The company said in its third-quarter report in November it has already invested more than $17 billion in a fleet of nearly 120 LNG- and methanol-powered ships to be delivered by 2027.
