Altera adds another LNG-powered shuttle tanker to its fleet

Altera Infrastructure, previously known as Teekay Offshore, has recently taken delivery of another LNG-powered shuttle tanker from South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries.

The 103,000 dwt Altera Wave is the second out of three LNG-powered E-Shuttle tankers the Brookfield Business Partners-controlled firm named at Samsung in August 2020.

Moreover, the vessel joins Altera as the fifth in a series of six LNG-powered vessels in its fleet.

Altera took delivery of Altera Wave on January 4 and the vessel departed the yard about a week later.

The tanker was on Monday located in the Singapore Strait after wrapping up a bunkering operation from the Petronas-chartered Avenir Advantage.

Norway’s Cryo Shipping teamed up with Petronas on this development. To remind, a unit of the Malaysian giant started using Avenir’s dual-purpose bunkering and supply vessel in November last year by completing the country’s first STS bunkering operation.

Back to Altera Wawe, the E-Shuttle tankers operate on LNG as the primary fuel but they will also use a mixture of LNG and recovered volatile organic compounds as secondary fuel.

In addition, the vessels also feature battery packs for flexible power distribution and blackout prevention.

Altera took delivery of the first of the three vessels in this batch, the 130,000 dwt Current Spirit, in August last year. This vessel already works for Norway’s Equinor in the North Sea.

The last newbuild, Altera Wind, should join the fleet soon marking the completion of the deliveries of all six LNG-powered ships.

As per the trio before this batch, Samsung delivered to Altera the third LNG-powered Suezmax DP2 shuttle tanker, Tide Spirit in July last year. This vessel started serving Equinor in October.

The two other shuttle tankers for Equinor, Aurora Spirit and Rainbow Spirit, also started operations in the North Sea last year.
