UGL clinches Darwin LNG job from Santos

Australian LNG player Santos has awarded a contract to CIMIC’s unit UGL for the Darwin LNG life extension project in the Northern Territory.

Under the contract, UGC will provide provide brownfields construction services for the project, it said in a statement.

The firm said it will immediately start work on this contract with up to 100 jobs to be generated through the life of the project.

UGL did not provide additional details regarding the deal.

In November last year, the last LNG cargo produced from the Bayu-Undan gas field has sailed from the Santos-operated Darwin LNG plant in Australia’s Northern Territory.

The final LNG shipment from Bayu-Undan left the 3.7 mtpa Darwin LNG plant at Wickham Point on November 11.

The Darwin LNG plant launched operations in 2006 and the facility is now being readied for the next 20 years, in preparation for the start of Barossa gas production in 2025, according to Santos.

In March 2021, Santos took FID on its $3.6 billion Barossa project to secure feed gas for the Darwin LNG plant, and it took FID on August 2022 on the Darwin pipeline duplication project.

To prepare for Barossa gas, the A$925 million ($609 million) Darwin LNG life extension project will boost local jobs and businesses and create 300 new construction and maintenance jobs, Santos previously said.
