Hapag-Lloyd picks MAN engines for LNG-powered giants

German container shipping firm Hapag-Lloyd has selected compatriot MAN Energy Solutions to supply dual-fuel engines for its recently ordered six ultra-large LNG-powered vessels.

Under the deal, Volkswagen’s MAN Energy Solutions will provide six MAN B&W 11G95ME-GI Mk10.5 main engines, it said on Tuesday.

The firm says it would build the engines in South Korea and plans to deliver the first in May 2022.

Furthermore, the vessels will sail on LNG as the main fuel, but with sufficient tank capacity to operate on conventional fuel.

As previously reported, South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering secured the order to build the 23,500+ TEU vessels with a price tag of about $1 billion.

Additionally, Daewoo will deliver the giant LNG-powered ships between April and December 2023.

Hapag-Lloyd will deploy the ships on the Europe – Far East routes as part of The Alliance, a shipping consortium consisting of the German liner, ONE, Yang Ming, and HMM.

Besides these newbuilds Hapag-Lloyd is also converting a 15,000 TEU vessel to run on LNG at China’s Huarun Dadong yard.

Sajir, now Brussels Express, also features MAN engines. The vessel left the Shanghai yard this week for trials and should join the German firm’s fleet during this quarter.

This $35 million pilot project is important as it would help Hapag-Lloyd to decide on future LNG conversions.
