GTT bags LNG tank gig for Nakilat’s vessels

French LNG containment giant GTT has secured a tank design order from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) for two Nakilat’s LNG carriers.

GTT received the order from KSOE during the first quarter of 2024, it said on Tuesday.

The two 174,000-cbm LNG carriers will be built by KSOE’s unit Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.

GTT said the tanks of these LNG carriers will feature the company’s Mark III Flex membrane containment system.

Besides the LNG carriers, GTT won an order from KSOE for one very large ethane carrier (VLEC) which will be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries for Purus Maritime.

GTT will design the tanks for this VLEC, which will have a total capacity of 98,000 cbm and incorporate the Mark III membrane containment system, it said.

Qatari LNG shipping giant Nakilat placed orders on January 9 with Hyundai Samho for the construction of two LNG tankers and four LPG carriers.

Nakilat will take delivery of these vessels between 2026 and 2027.

HD KSOE said in a filling to the stock exchange on January 10 that the entire order is worth about $955 million.

It did not break down the price for just the LNG carriers but shipbuilding sources said at the time that Nakilat most likely secured a cheaper price for the LNG vessels compared to the latest orders for LNG carriers at HD Hyundai’s yards which were priced at about $265 million per vessel.

VesselsValue data suggests that each LNG carrier is worth about $253 million.

Upon delivery of the two new LNG carriers, Nakilat’s LNG fleet will expand to 71 vessels, while the LPG fleet will grow to eight vessels.
