GTT gets DNV GL approval for LNG fuel tank

Classification society DNV GL has granted approval in principle to France’s GTT for an LNG fuel tank following a similar approval by BV in January.

The DNV GL approval is also for the NO96 membrane containment system for application on LNG-powered ultra large container vessels (ULCVs), GTT said.

Moreover, GTT and DNV GL worked together to review the compatibility and safe integration of the NO96 technology as an LNG fuel tank in a container vessel hull.

In addition, the duo also completed a sloshing assessment of the containment system over the course of the AiP study, GTT said.

GTT’s chief Philippe Berterottière said the approval allows the firm to offer to the ship owners two membrane technologies: Mark III technology, which has already been certified, and NO96.

Worth mentioning here, CMA CGM’s LNG-powered ultra-large container vessels already feature GTT’s tanks. The world’s largest LNG fuel tanks have a capacity of 18,600 cbm.

CMA CGM already took delivery of five of these LNG-powered 23,000 TEU vessels while other four sister ships will follow in the coming months.
