Sixth LNG-powered shuttle tanker to join Altera’s fleet

Altera Infrastructure confirmed on Thursday it would soon take the delivery of the sixth and last LNG-powered shuttle tanker from South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries.

The Aberdeen-based shipping firm previously known as Teekay Offshore said in its fourth-quarter report it plans to take delivery of the 103,000 dwt Altera Wind during February while its East Coast of Canada newbuilding should join early-2022.

Altera reported a $73 million net loss for the three months ended December 31, compared to a $9 million loss it logged during the same quarter a year ago.

To remind, the firm took delivery of its fifth LNG-powered vessel Altera Wave early January.

The shuttle tanker newbuilding is currently en route to the North Sea to start work for Norway’s Equinor, joining the other four Altera’s LNG-powered newbuild already working in the area.

The E-Shuttle tankers operate on LNG as the primary fuel but they will also use a mixture of LNG and recovered volatile organic compounds as secondary fuel.

In addition, the vessels also feature battery packs for flexible power distribution and blackout prevention.
