Petronas, Jera to work on LNG bunkering as part of new pact

Malaysia’s Petronas and Japan’s Jera have signed a deal to collaborate in a number of areas, including LNG bunkering, as the duo looks to further slash emissions.

Petronas said on Tuesday the memorandum of understanding with Japan’s largest power generation firm entails low-carbon energy initiatives, covering LNG, ammonia, and hydrogen.

Petronas executive VP, gas and new energy, Adnan Zainal Abidin, and corporate VP and chief operating officer, business development department, Jera, Yukio Kani, formalised the collaboration during a virtual ceremony.

Under the deal, the duo said it would intensify collaboration in the supply chains for ammonia and hydrogen fuels while continuing to advocate for the use of LNG.

This builds upon Petronas’ position as one of the world’s largest LNG producers, experience as a producer of ammonia as well as the establishment of the company’s hydrogen business in November last year, the statement said.

Today, Petronas is already producing blue hydrogen as a by-product from its facilities and plans to explore the commercial production of green hydrogen in the near future.

In the LNG space, the two firms will work to grow the use of natural gas as a cleaner marine fuel through LNG bunkering solutions, in support of International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations on greenhouse gas emissions, the statement said.

Through the new deal, Petronas and Jera will explore the establishment of a global bunkering supply network, leveraging on both companies’ experience in LNG bunkering, the statement said.

To remind, Petronas completed its maiden LNG bunkering operation at Pasir Gudang in November last year, whereas Jera wrapped up its first LNG bunkering operation in Japan in October.
