Kongsberg to supply equipment for Novatek-chartered Arctic LNG 2 carriers

Norway’s Kongsberg Maritime has won a contract to deliver equipment for six new Arc7 ice-class tankers that will serve Novatek’s Arctic LNG 2 project on the Gydan peninsula.

Under the deal with Russian LNG producer Novatek, Kongsberg will supply a range of electric frequency converter-driven deck machinery for the sextet, with an option for a further four ships, it said in a statement.

To remind, South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering is building three 172,400-cbm vessels for Japan’s MOL and three for Russia’s Sovcomflot.

The Novatek-chartered vessels will mainly transport LNG from the Gydan facility to the transshipment terminals in Kamchatka and Murmansk via the Northern Sea Route.

Kongsberg said each LNG carrier will feature two combined windlasses and mooring winches capable of handling a 17-tonne anchor with 111mm anchor chain, plus a further seven mooring winches.

Novatek also requested the windlasses and mooring winches to have a specially-developed modification in the form of an electrically-operated, spring-loaded band brake, the Norwegian firm said.

In addition, Kongsberg will also supply control systems and load monitoring for the winches.

To remind, Finland’s Wartsila recently said it would deliver engines for the Arc7 tankers. Each vessel will feature six 46DF dual-fuel engines.
