Fluxys takes FID to add more Zeebrugge regas capacity

Belgium’s Fluxys said it has taken a final investment decision to boost regasification capacity at its Zeebrugge LNG terminal following a successful open season.

The firm said in a statement on Monday that during the binding window of the open season, companies subscribed to the full 6 million tonnes per year (or 10.5 GWh/h) capacity on offer.

As a consequence, Fluxys took the FID saying it plans to build the additional regasification capacity in two stages.

As from early 2024, the firm plans to add a total of 4.7 mtpa (or 8.2 GWh/h) of additional capacity to the LNG terminal located in the port of Zeebrugge.

Furthermore, as from early 2026, the firm aims to wrap up the full 6 mtpa project, it said.

The Zeebrugge terminal currently consists of five tanks with a storage capacity of 566,000 cbm and regasification capacity of about 6.6 mtpa.

In 2019, a unit of Qatar Petroleum booked all the unloading slots at the terminal from the expiry of the current contracts until 2044.

In addition, the facility logged a record number of ship operations in 2020, boosted by Yamal transshipments and despite a decline in unloads and reloads.

The LNG terminal in total conducted 172 ship operations during 2020. This compares to 130 operations in the year before.
