Japan’s Meiji Shipping buys LNG carrier duo from Shell

Japan’s Meiji Shipping has purchased two 2010-built liquefied natural gas carriers from a unit of energy giant Shell as it looks to expand its LNG business.

The shipping firm said on Monday it signed a deal via its Dutch unit MK Centennial Maritime B.V. with UK-based Methane Services Limited for the two 170,000-cbm LNG vessels.

In addition, Meiji plans to take delivery of the vessels between April and August this year.

South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries built both Methane Mickie Harper and Methane Patricia Camila.

Meiji did not reveal any additional information regarding the deal only saying the price is “fair and reasonable” looking at the current market value.

According to VesselsValue data, the ships have a market value of about $113 million, each.

Meiji entered the LNG shipping business back in 2019 with its first managed vessel, Marvel Kite.

Moreover, the 174,000-cbm NYK carrier mainly transports LNG from Sempra’s Cameron project in the US.
