Teekay nets charters for LNG carrier duo

Teekay LNG has secured charters for two liquefied natural gas carriers in which the shipper holds a 52 percent stake.

The Bermuda-based firm said in its fourth-quarter report that the existing charterer has exercised its option in October to extend the contract for the 2008-built 165,500 cbm Marib Spirit.

According to Teekay, the deal is for 14 months at a “higher charter rate”, extending the DFDE vessel’s charter coverage to early-2022.

Furthermore, the company’s 52 percent-owned joint venture with Marubeni Corporation, MALT, has secured a two-year, fixed-rate charter contract, with a one-year option, for the TFDE Methane Spirit.

Moreover, the 2008-built 165,500 cbm LNG carrier will start serving the new contract after its current charter deal ends in March this year, Teekay said.

Following these charters, the firm has secured employment for 97 percent of its LNG fleet for 2021, and 89 percent for 2022, it said.
