France-based energy giant Total said Friday it won a licence by the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore to supply LNG as fuel in the port.
Total Marine Fuels, a unit of the firm, secured the licence for a five-year term starting January 1, 2022.
With this move, Total’s unit becomes the third licensed LNG bunkering supplier in Singapore.
The first two include FueLNG, a venture between Keppel O&M and Shell, and Pavilion.
Furthermore, the new award follows a request for proposals launched by Singapore’s MPA to issue up to two new bunkering licences to support the growing demand for LNG as fuel in the country.
Singapore currently has an LNG bunkering supply capacity of up to one million tonnes per annum, according to Total.
“This achievement underscores Total’s goal to be a leading LNG bunker supplier globally, and is in line with our climate ambition to get to net zero by 2050, together with society” said Jérôme Leprince-Ringuet, vice president, marine fuels, Total.
“LNG is the best, immediately available solution to reduce our shipping customers’ carbon footprint and it paves the way towards carbon-neutral bio-LNG and synthetic methane,” he said.
MPA chief executive Quah Ley Hoon said that as the world’s top bunkering hub, the Port of Singapore is “well-positioned” to expand its offering of marine fuel solutions.
In addition, MPA welcomes Total Marine Fuels’ entry into Singapore’s LNG bunker market to bolster the country’s ambition in becoming Asia’s leading LNG bunkering hub, he said.
