Keel laid for NYK LNG carrier destined for Edison charter

South Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries on Tuesday hosted a keel-laying ceremony for NYK Line’s 174,000 cbm LNG carrier.

The Japanese shipping giant will charter the newbuild for a period of 20 years to Milan-based energy firm Edison as part of a deal revealed in April 2019.

Hyundai Samho plans to deliver the vessel with a working name S971 next year, after it will start serving Edison.

The naming ceremony revealed Marseille-based Romarin LNG Shipping, which is probably a new unit of NYK, as the owner of the vessel.

Furhermore, the BV-classed vessel will feature WinGD dual-fuel slow-speed X-DF engines, but also GTT’s Mark III Flex containment system.

In addition, the 297 meters long carrier will also have Air Liquide’s Turbo-Brayton refrigeration system that can tap surplus boil-off gas, according to NYK.
