Woodside announced the milestone in a statement on Monday saying the successful completion of the Pluto Train 2 module program advances the Scarborough energy project towards the targeted delivery of first LNG in 2026.
In February this year, Woodside received the first three modules from Indonesia at the Pluto Train 2 project site.
A total of 51 modules, weighing a combined 56,000 metric tonnes, have arrived to Karratha from the module yard in Batam, Indonesia.
Singapore’s Sembcorp Marine, now Seatrium, joined forces with Bechtel in 2021 to build these modules.
Woodside said that expanding the Pluto LNG facility to include a second LNG processing train would provide an efficient way to process gas from the offshore Scarborough field.
Pluto Train 2 will get gas from the Scarborough gas field, located about 375 km off the coast of Western Australia, through a new trunkline long about 430 km.
Once operational, Pluto Train 2 will have capacity to process about 5 million tonnes of LNG per annum.
The expanded Pluto facility includes new domestic gas infrastructure and will have the capacity to supply up to 225 terajoules per day to the Western Australian market.
In November 2021, Woodside took a final investment decision on the Scarborough and Pluto LNG Train 2 developments.
Also, the project includes modifications to the first train.
Woodside’s Pluto LNG terminal currently has one train with a capacity of 4.9 mtpa and Woodside and US engineer Bechtel started building the second Pluto train in 2022.
Scarborough over three-quarters complete
Woodside executive VP and COO Australia Liz Westcott said the “safe and timely arrival of all modules was a credit to both the Woodside team and lead contractor Bechtel.”
“The scale of what has been delivered is an incredible achievement and reflects the team’s commitment and professionalism.
According to Westcott, the Scarborough energy project has made “significant” progress across multiple work fronts and is now over three-quarters complete.
The Scarborough and the second Pluto LNG train projects were 73 percent complete at the end of the third quarter.
“The Woodside and Bechtel teams will now focus on executing the module integration and commissioning of the facility in preparation for the targeted first Scarborough LNG cargo in 2026,” Westcott said.
