MSC takes delivery of new LNG-powered containership in China

China’s Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC) has delivered another LNG-powered containership to Switzerland-based shipping giant MSC.

According to a statement by DSIC, the shipbuilder handed over the 16,000-teu LNG dual-fuel containership, MSC Carmela, on January 8.

This is the second of eight 16,000-teu LNG-powered vessels DSIC built for MSC, following the delivery of the first vessel in this batch, MSC Mariacristina, in October 2024.

The shipbuilder started building this vessel (C16K-11) in June 2023, and the vessel completed its trials last month.

This newbuild is 366 meters long and 51 meters wide and can carry 16,044 standard containers and 1,800 reefer containers.

DSIC previously said the main WinGD engine has the iCER diesel energy-saving tech and can use low-sulphur fuel oil and LNG.

Also, the containership and its sister vessels feature a type B LNG tank independently designed and built by DSIC.

The tanks, made of 9 percent nickel steel, have a capacity of 13,000 cbm.
