Sarawak Energy to power Petronas’ Bintulu LNG complex

A unit of Sarawak Energy is to provide electricity to the Petronas-operated Bintulu LNG export complex in Malaysia as part of a deal revealed on Thursday.

Syarikat Sesco and Malaysia LNG, a unit of Petronas and the operator of the giant 30 mtpa LNG complex in Sarawak, signed the term sheet.

Under the deal, Sesco is committing to provide 90 megawatts of electricity supply at 275kV to the LNG complex from March 2024 for a term of 20 years, according to a joint statement.

In addition, this move would booost clean energy consumption and decarbonise operations of the complex, in tandem with Petronas’ aspiration of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the statement said.

Sarawak Energy’s electricity supply is predominantly renewable following its transition to renewable energy resources under the SCORE strategic initiative.

The utility has recorded a reduction in carbon intensity for power generation by 68% from 2011 to 2019, the statement said.
