Germany’s Brunsbüttel Ports hosted the first LNG bunkering operation for the newly commissioned Greenferry I.
The operation took place on Wednesday night in the Elbehafen, according to the port operator.
In addition, Liquind Marine partnered up with GasCom Equipment to deliver LNG via a truck-to-ship method.
To remind, the unit of Berlin-based LNG filling station developer Liquind completed its first operation in September last year bunkering the dredger Scheld River, also in Brunsbüttel.
The port has already hosted many LNG bunkering operations where ships received the fuel via trucks but also via the ship-to-ship method.
Elbferry’s Greenferry I will now regularly call at the port to refuel LNG as it will make several trips per day on the river Elbe to connect Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel.
The 130 meters long ferry covers the 32-kilometer route connecting the two cities on the coastal regions between Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.
The vessel is not new as it previously served Fjord 1.
Previously known as Fanafjord, Norwegian shipping firm Fjord 1 used the 2007-built LNG-powered ferry for operations south of Bergen. The vessel has also four sister ships.
It has a capacity of 150 cars and 28 trucks and can host up to 600 passengers.
In addition, it features two LNG tanks with a total capacity of 225 cbm and two main Bergen engines.
