Japanese companies establish carbon-neutral LNG buyers alliance

Tokyo Gas said on Tuesday that fifteen Japanese firms have joined forces to establish a carbon-neutral LNG alliance as they seek to further slash emissions.

The city gas supplier and LNG importer said the partners established the Carbon Neutral LNG (CNL) Buyers Alliance through the “concerted efforts of Tokyo Gas, which procures and supplies carbon-neutral LNG, and the remaining companies, which purchase the carbon-neutral fuel.”

In addition, one of the goals is to boost the use of carbon-neutral LNG and increase its utility value toward the “achievement of a sustainable society,” Tokyo Gas said.

“Choosing carbon-neutral energy is an important solution that will contribute toward tackling climate change and the SDGs, as well as directly lead to ESG management,” it said.

The companies participating in the alliance would work to increase the recognition of carbon-neutral LNG in society and carry out initiatives to improve its evaluation by investment institutions.

Moreover, they would also work to establish its position within the various systems in Japan with the aim of contributing toward Japan’s achievement of a carbon-neutral society by 2050, the statement said.

Besides Tokyo Gas, the alliance includes Asahi Group, Isuzu Motors, Olympus, Sakai Chemical Industry, Duskin, Tamagawa Academy & University, Toshiba, Toho Titanium, New Otani, Marunouchi Heat Supply, Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, Mitsubishi Estate, Yakult Honsha, and Lumine Co.
