Samsung nets five LNG-powered containerships

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries said it has secured an order to build five additional LNG-powered ultra-large container vessels from an unidentified Asian owner.

This order adds to five LNG-powered ULCVs the Korean shipbuilder revealed in February.

The order for the new 15,000 TEU quintet has a price tag of 794.2 billion won ($700 million), Samsung said in a stock exchange announcement.

In addition, the Korean yard said it would deliver the ships by January 2024, without revealing any further info.

These orders for ten LNG-powered containerships, worth about $1.4 billion, most likely relate to the recent announcement by Hong Kong-based Seaspan and Israel’s Zim.

Zim said it would charter ten LNG-powered ULCVs from Seaspan to serve its Asia-US East Coast trade. The duo also said that Samsung would build the vessels.

To remind, Samsung also announced an order for four LNG-powered very large crude oil carriers last month.

The Korean yard has this year won orders worth $2.4 billion to build 19 vessels in total, it said.
