Greece boosts gas consumption as US LNG deliveries surge

Greece has increased its gas consumption last year as US LNG deliveries via DESFA’s Revithoussa terminal rose more than six times when compared to the year before.

DESFA said in its yearly report that 2020 marked a record year for Greek gas consumption which increased by 9.5 percent compared to the year before.

Consumption in the January-December period reached 63.1 million Megawatt hours (MWh) or 5.48 Bcm, compared to 57.4 million MWh in 2019, the Greek gas grid and LNG terminal operator said.

Total imports stood at 70.6 million MWh or 6.12 Bcm with 46 percent of these volumes coming to the Revithoussa terminal.

In addition, regasification volumes totaled 32.6 million MWh or 2.8 Bcm, a rise of 3.8 percent year-on-year, DESFA said, adding LNG dominated over pipeline gas due to lower prices last year.

The Revithoussa terminal in total received 49 LNG tankers from 8 countries last year, compared to 50 in 2019.

Out of these volumes, US LNG deliveries rose from 2.5 million MWh in 2019 to 16.1 million MWh last year, accounting for 48 percent of all LNG imports, DESFA said.

Qatar also recorded double digits of 22 percent, followed by Nigeria and Algeria with 9 percent. Norway, Egypt, France and the Netherlands supplied 3 percent of the total, each.
