Shell elects Andrew Mackenzie as new chairman

LNG giant Shell has appointed current board member Andrew Mackenzie as the new chairman.

He will succeed Chad Holliday, who will step down after the company’s annual general meeting in May, Shell said in a statement.

Mackenzie, a British national, joined Shell’s board in October 2020, following a career in the energy, petrochemicals and resources sector, latterly as CEO of BHP from 2013 to 2019.

He also worked at Rio Tinto from 2004 to 2007, but prior to that he had a 22-year career at BP, holding senior leadership roles in exploration, research and development, and chemicals.

“I am looking forward to working with Andrew. We are emerging from the Covid-19 pandemic with a clear and distinct strategy that I believe will enable us to seize the opportunities presented by the energy transition,” Shell chief executive Ben van Beurden, said.

In addition, Beurden said he “cannot think of anyone better than Andrew to take this role.”
