Repsol says wraps up LNG bunkering op with carbon offsets attached

Spanish energy firm Repsol said it has completed its first LNG bunkering operation which included carbon offsets in the port of Cartagena.

Repsol, which looks to become a net-zero emissions business by 2050, said it bunkered the recently delivered Fure Vinga with 420 cbm of LNG using the Enagas-operated facilities in the port.

Following delivery in China, the dual-fuel vessel is on its way to start serving Furetank’s clients in the Baltic region but also northwest Europe.

“The uniqueness of the operation is that this is the first time that Repsol, as a supplier of LNG, has guaranteed the compensation of the total CO2 emissions associated with the consumption of this delivery,” the firm said in a statement.

Repsol said it purchased the carbon credits (VERs) in the voluntary carbon market.

In addition, Repsol said the LNG bunkering delivery marks the first direct supply for the firm from the Enagas-operated terminal in Cartagena. So far, the firm supplied mostly LNG fuel by trucks in Spanish ports, it said.

Moreover, Repsol is also developing two LNG terminals at the ports of Bilbao and Santander, it said.
