Cemre delivers first LNG-powered fishing vessel to Liegruppen

Turkish shipbuilder Cemre has delivered to Norwegian firm Liegruppen what it says is the world’s first battery and LNG-powered fishing vessel.

The yard said in a statement it delivered the ship named Libas to the fishing group on March 11.

Developed by Norway’s Salt Ship Design, the 86 meters long purse seiner/pelagic trawler is the first such hybrid vessel featuring both LNG and battery power, according to Cemre.

In addition, MAN Energy Solutions has supplied the vessel’s dual-fuel propulsion but also a MAN Cryo LNG fuel system with a 350 cbm tank.

The DNV-classed ship also features Corvus Energy’s 508 kWh battery pack for peak shaving operations.

Besides this fishing vessel, Cemre won a contract in December from Norway’s Selvag to build another LNG-powered seiner/pelagic trawler.

Following delivery in the third quarter of 2022, the vessel, which will also feature a battery pack, would become the third such ship in the world to go on LNG, according to Cemre.

Prior to this delivery, the yard will hand over another LNG-powered ship to Norwegian fishing company Teige Rederi. Sunny Lady will also sail on LNG and have a battery pack.
