Shell launches investigation after data security incident

The Hague-based LNG giant Shell said it has launched an investigation following a data security incident.

The incident involved Accellion’s file transfer appliance which Shell uses to transfer large data files, it said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Upon learning of the incident, Shell addressed the vulnerabilities with its service provider and cyber security team, and started an investigation to better understand the nature and extent of the incident,” the firm said.

Furthermore, Shell said it found no evidence of any impact to the company’s core IT systems as the file transfer service doesn’t connect to the rest of its digital infrastructure.

However, the ongoing investigation has shown that an unauthorized party gained access to various files during a “limited window of time,” Shell said.

“Some contained personal data and others included data from Shell companies and some of their stakeholders,” it said.

“Shell is in contact with the impacted individuals and stakeholders and we are working with them to address possible risks,” the firm said.

In addition, Shell said it has also contacted relevant regulators and authorities and would continue to work with them as the investigation continues.
