Canada’s Woodfibre LNG, a joint venture of Pacific Energy and Enbridge, plans to add a second floatel at the site of its LNG export facility near Squamish, British Columbia.
Woodfibre LNG announced in a statement it will submit an application to regulatory agencies to add a second workplace accommodation floatel.
According to the LNG terminal developer, the application will seek regulatory approval to moor the second floatel adjacent to the current floatel, Isabelle X, to add approximately 900 skilled trades jobs to the construction project.
Woodfibre LNG noted that the requirement to house the project’s non-local construction workforce on the floatel was established through an amendment to the project’s environmental assessment certificate approved by the provincial government on November 1, 2023.
Subsequently, in December 2023, the Squamish Nation approved an amendment to the Squamish Nation environmental assessment agreement to support the floatel.
Woodfibre LNG said this second floatel will now undergo the same regulatory review process through multiple levels of regulatory oversight.
The company will enter into a contract with the same Canadian company, Bridgemans Services Group, that procured and retrofitted Isabelle X, for the additional vessel.
Woodfibre LNG said recently it has almost completed the marine offloading facility at the site of its LNG export facility, paving the way for the arrival of preassembled modules from China starting this summer.
While construction on-site began in September 2023, the project has adopted a modular construction approach to enhance efficiency and meet its construction timeline.
The facility, which will have a capacity of 2.1 mtpa as well as storage of about 250,000 cbm, is expected to be completed in 2027.
