NYK LNG carrier rescues 11 people in Atlantic Ocean

A liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier managed by a unit of Japan’s shipping giant NYK rescued 11 Portuguese fishers in the Atlantic Ocean on June 22.

While en route to the port of Dunkirk in France, the vessel received a distress call from a fishing boat that had sustained hull damage, according to a NYK statement on Wednesday.

NYK said the LNG carrier, managed by NYK LNG Shipmanagement, immediately headed to the scene and rescued all 11 individuals on board.

“They are reported to be in good health and are scheduled to disembark at Dunkirk port around June 26,” NYK said.

NYK did not reveal the name of the LNG carrier.

According to its AIS data provided by VesselsValue, the 2019-built 180,000-cbm, Bushu Maru, is expected to arrive in Dunkirk on June 26.

Bushu Maru is loaded with a cargo from the Freeport LNG terminal in the US, the data shows.

The “Sayaringo STaGE” type vessel is owned by a joint venture of NYK and Jera.

NYK is one of the world’s largest operators of LNG carriers.

The company’s fleet of operational LNG carriers stood at 89 vessels at the end of September last year.
