BW takes delivery of ME-GI LNG carrier

BW LNG, a unit of the Singapore-based gas shipping giant, has taken delivery of a new ME-GI vessel from South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering.

The firm welcomed the 174,000-cbm BW Lesmes on Tuesday.

“BW Lesmes is named in honour of Luis Lesmes, who sadly passed away in 2014. Luis was a pioneer of LNG trading, leaving an irreplaceable mark on the industry,” BW said.

The vessel goes on a charter to UK-based energy giant BP, according to BW.

Moreover, the LNG carrier is the sixth newbuilding featuring MAN ME-GI propulsion in a series of nine ships ordered at the Korean yard.

ME-GI is short for M-type, electronically controlled, gas-injection propulsion.

The 294.4 meters long vessel also features a reliquefaction system and GTT’s NO96 containment technology.

To remind, the previous vessel in this batch, BW Pavilion Aranthera, joined BW in July last year. This vessel works under a charter deal with BW’s partner Pavilion while the vessel delivered in February 2020, BW Magnolia, also serves BP.

The shipping firm plans to take delivery of the seventh newbuild in June this year, followed by the last two vessels in August and September in 2022, according to its website.
