Canada’s BC Ferries names fourth LNG-powered vessel

Canada’s BC Ferries has named its fourth LNG-powered ferry as it looks to take delivery of the vessel next year.

Poland’s Remontowa Shipbuilding launched the fourth Salish-class LNG-powered vessel for the shipping firm in December last year.

“In recognition of the Coast Salish as the traditional stewards and original mariners of the Salish Sea, BC Ferries has named its new Salish-Class ferry Salish Heron,” the ferry operator said on Tuesday.

Remontowa has previously delivered three similar ferries to BC Ferries, namely the Salish Orca, Salish Raven, and Salish Eagle.

The new 107-metre long vessel will have the capacity to carry at least 138 vehicles and up to 600 passengers and crew.

It will replace BC Ferries’ diesel-powered Mayne Queen on the Swartz Bay-Southern Gulf Islands line in the province of British Columbia.

The ship features three Wartsila engines and electrically-propelled Schottel thrusters.
