Germany’s Friedrich Vorwerk announced the award for the pipeline from Gasunie Germany in a statement on Tuesday.
The order for the 86 km long pipeline has a “total volume in the mid-range of hundreds of millions of euros,” according to Friedrich Vorwerk.
It will be implemented by an equal joint venture consisting of Friedrich Vorwerk and Bohlen & Doyen, and the Austrian Habau Group (PPS Pipeline Systems and Habau).
Friedrich Vorwerk said the first preparatory construction work is scheduled to start in the second half of 2025.
Moreover, the main construction work is planned to begin in 2026, allowing for commissioning to take place in 2027.
Friedrich Vorwerk noted that the background to ETL 182 is the significant increase in gas transport demand, which is expected to be triggered by the new LNG import terminals in Brunsbüttel and Stade/Bützfleth.
The new pipeline, with a planned diameter of DN 1400, will connect the two network points “Elbe Süd” in the district of Stade and “Achim” in the district of Verden, enabling nationwide transmission via the German natural gas transmission network.
Friedrich Vorwerk said the “fastest possible implementation of the project is therefore in the central interest of a secure and diversified gas supply in Germany.”
“The LNG Acceleration Act passed by the German federal government therefore establishes the energy industry necessity for gas supply to households and industry for this project,” the firm said.
German LNG terminals
German LNG terminal operator Deutsche Energy Terminal currently operates the FSRU-based facility in Brunsbüttel, which features the 170,000-cbm FSRU Hoegh Gannet.
In addition, Gasunie and German energy firm RWE are moving forward with the construction of the German government-backed onshore LNG import terminal in Brunsbüttel.
This onshore facility is expected to be launched in 2027.
State-owned DET also recently told LNG Prime that it plans to launch commercial operations at its second FSRU-based terminal in Wilhelmshaven in August.
The 138,000-cbm FSRU Excelsior is located two kilometers south of the already operational Wilhelmshaven 1 terminal, which features the FSRU Hoegh Esperanza.
DET is also working on the Stade FSRU-based terminal.
However, in March, the company terminated the contract related to the Stade FSRU-based facility with compatriot Hanseatic Energy Hub, the developer of the onshore LNG terminal in Stade.
In the meantime, DET sub-chartered the 2021-built 174,000-cbm FSRU, Energos Force, for deployment in Jordan, as it works on the next steps for the delayed Stade LNG import facility in Germany.
Besides these terminals, private firm Deutsche ReGas operates the FSRU-based LNG import facility in Mukran.
