Total said Thursday it would supply MSC Cruises’ upcoming LNG-powered cruise ships with liquefied natural gas in the French port of Marseille.

Under the deal, Total would supply about 45,000 tons per year of LNG, it said in a statement.

The new contract marks the first LNG bunkering deal for Total that involves cruise vessels.

MSC Cruises plans to launch its first of three LNG-powered cruise ships in 2022.

Total will bunker these ships sailing on Mediterranean routes by ship-to-ship transfer, using its second chartered LNG bunkering vessel currently under construction at Hudong.

By 2022, Total will operate two 18,600-cbm LNG bunkering vessels in Rotterdam and Marseille. China’s Hudong delivered Gas Agility to MOL and Total in 2020 while the second vessel should join this year.

In addition, Total will also share the use of a third bunker vessel in Singapore, it said.

In February this year, the company also received a license from the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore to supply LNG in the port from 2022.
