Excelerate says completes 2000th STS LNG transfer

Texas-based floating LNG player Excelerate Energy said it has completed its 2000th commercial ship-to-ship transfer of liquefied natural gas.

The milestone transfer took place on April 3 at Excelerate’s Moheshkhali floating LNG terminal located offshore Bangladesh in the Bay of Bengal.

Excelerate’s FSRU Excellence received 144,191 cubic meters of LNG from a conventional carrier during the operation, according to the firm.

Excelerate said it conducted the industry’s first commercial STS transfer of LNG back in 2007.

Since then, the US firm has transferred over 236,405,000 cubic meters of LNG using its STS protocol, it said.

Bangladesh LNG imports on the rise

Excelerate has started providing LNG to Bangladesh in 2018 through its two FSRUs located offshore in the Bay of Bengal.

“Both projects have represented a 20 percent uplift in gas supply to the country, allowing for a more resilient gas and power grid for the Chattogram region, which is home to residents, fertilizer factories, and several industries that were previously underserved,” the firm said.

The two FSRUs received more than 157 cargoes of LNG and delivered an excess of 500 million MMBtu of natural gas into the Bangladeshi market to date, it said.

In addition, the country reached its highest level of gas output with around 837 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of natural gas in March as the government continues to increase its LNG imports to meet the rising domestic demand, Excelerate said.
