Babcock to deliver equipment for Shell-chartered LNG carriers

London-based Babcock will supply its LNG reliquefaction technology for five vessels under consturction at South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The firm’s LGE business will deliver the boil-off gas (BOG) reliquefaction technology, ecoSMRT, bringing the total order count to 50 in less than three years, Babcock said in a statement.

Four of the five LNG carriers to get the systems will go on charter to Shell Tankers (Singapore), a unit of Shell, and HHI will start delivering them from 2022 to multiple ship owners.

This will bring the number of Shell-chartered vessels featuring this tchnology to over 20, according to Babcock.

In addition, Sovcomflot’s latest LNG carrier newbuild at HHI will also get the same tech.

Babcock said it has developed the technology to “combat inefficiencies” in existing BOG reliquefaction systems.

With each system capable of reducing CO2 emissions by up to 19,000 tonnes per year, ecoSMRT also plays an “important role” in managing LNG carrier emissions.

“The system maximises vessels’ operating lifecycle and supports the marine industry’s transition towards a net-zero future,” Babcock said.
