Finnish Border Guard joins forces with Wartsila and Gasum to test bio-LNG

The Finnish Border Guard has teamed up with Wartsila and Gasum to test bio-LNG as fuel for its patrol vessel.

The aim of the project is to further reduce emissions from the 96 metre long LNG-powered vessel Turva.

Gasum already completed two bio-LNG deliveries in Helsinki to the 2014-built patrol vessel which features Wartsila dual-fuel engines.

The fuel came from Gasum’s plant in Risavika in Norway and from the Turku biogas plant in Finland.

In addition, Gasum will make another delivery in the coming weeks from Risavika to Helsinki via the company’s terminal in Pori, the firm said in a statement.

Gasum has already supported the Finnish Border Guard’s LNG-fueled offshore patrol vessel since the beginning of its operations.

“After close evaluation of the bio-LNG fuel specifications provided by Gasum, Wartsila is confident that it represents a viable fuel choice for the multi-fuel capability of the ship’s engines,” Warstila said in a separate statement.

Following this evaluation, the Finnish Border Guard opted to proceed with the testing programme, the engine manufacturer said.
