Harvest, an affiliate of Hilcorp, recently closed the acquisition of Marathon Petroleum’s Kenai LNG facility in Nikiski, advancing its February 2025 plan to redevelop existing LNG infrastructure to strengthen Southcentral Alaska’s energy security and provide energy solutions for local utilities and consumers.
Moreover, the acquisition includes about 100 acres of industrial waterfront, 107,000 cubic meters of LNG storage, and legacy dock infrastructure historically capable of handling LNG vessels up to 138,000 cubic meters (about 2.9 billion cubic feet of natural gas).
Back in August 2022, MPC’s Trans-Foreland Pipeline won more time from US regulators to bring the closed Kenai LNG export plant in Alaska back online as an import facility.
FERC granted an extension of time until and including December 17, 2025 to complete and place into service the project.
Three years
On November 12, 2025, Trans-Foreland filed an extension of time request for three years to complete construction and place the Kenai LNG cool down project into service.
FERC said in its order dated December 8 that Harvest Alaska, the new owner of Trans-Foreland, has been working to commercially develop the Kenai LNG terminal and its import capabilities.
In January 2023, the Alaska Department of Natural Resources published a study demonstrating that natural gas demand is projected to exceed supply beginning in 2027, with the gap widening significantly over time, FERC said.
“Based on Harvest’s feasibility studies and project development, Trans-Foreland states that it will be requesting an amendment to its authorization to address the forecasted needs of the southcentral Alaska region,” FERC said.
On November 17, 2025, the Commission issued public notice of Trans-Foreland’s request for an extension of time, with interventions, comments, and protests due December 2, 2025.
FERC said no comments or interventions were filed.
“Based on the facts presented in the request and the case record, Trans-Foreland is granted an extension of time until and including December 17, 2028 to complete construction of its Kenai LNG cool down project and make available for service,” the regulator said.
