Iveco to work on LNG-powered autonomous trucks

Italy-based truck manufacturer Iveco, a unit of CNH Industrial, has revealed plans to develop LNG-powered autonomous trucks.

The firm said in a statement on Monday it signed a memorandum of understanding with US-based autonomous truck developer Plus.

Under the memorandum, the duo would integrate Iveco’s S-Way heavy-duty truck with the PlusDrive full-stack autonomous driving system.

Moreover, the cooperation would also explore using Iveco’s LNG engine system to power the jointly developed autonomous trucks, the statement said.

“Bio-methane powered trucks are currently the only readily and at scale available alternative to diesel for a carbon-neutral transport,” the statement said.

Iveco already works on ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems) and the cooperation with Plus would further accelerate the development of the “highest levels of automation” of heavy trucks, the statement said.
