Japan’s Toho Gas gets first carbon-neutral LNG cargo

Japan’s city gas supplier and LNG importer Toho Gas said it has received its first carbon-neutral liquefied natural gas cargo at the Chita terminal.

Diamond Gas International, a unit of Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation, delivered the cargo and purchased carbon credits to offset the emissions associated with the shipment, according to Toho Gas.

In addition, the 165,000-cbm Diamond Gas Sakura delivered the shipment to Chita near Nagoya, where Toho Gas jointly operates the LNG terminal with Jera.

The facility consists of three terminals out of which two the duo operates together while one Toho Gas operates solo.

Toho Gas did not reveal any additional information regarding the shipment only saying it would continue buying carbon-neutral LNG to slash emissions.

Delivered in 2019, Diamond Gas Sakura mostly delivers LNG from Sempra’s Cameron terminal in Louisiana to Japan.

The vessel, owned by NYK and Mitsubishi but also Toho Gas and Tohoku Electric, loaded a cargo at Cameron as well prior to arriving at Chita terminal, its AIS data shows.

Diamond Gas and Toho Gas previously signed a deal for the delivery of LNG from the Cameron project.

Besides Cameron, the city gas supplier gets LNG from Australia, Malaysia, Qatar, and Russia. It would also receive the fuel from Shell’s LNG Canada project after the facility launches.

With the new shipment, Toho Gas now joins a growing number of companies that have already received carbon-neutral LNG.

The move also comes after Tokyo Gas recently said that fifteen Japanese firms have joined forces to establish a carbon-neutral LNG alliance as they seek to further slash emissions.
