South Korea’s shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries said it has completed a pilot test for its new LNG regasification system for FSRUs.

The shipbuilder said it held a demonstration of the new technology on April 13 at its Geoje yard attended by many firms including South Korean LNG importing giant Kogas.

The system produces power utilizing LNG cold energy.

According to Samsung, the technology named S-Regas is the world’s first regasification system for floating storage regasification units (FSRUs) that features LNG cold power generation technologies.

The system can produce 16 MW of electricity on its own, which is more than 90 percent of the power required for LNG regasification, the shipbuilder said.

In addition, the new technology can reduce more than 60,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year, Samsung said.
