Argentina’s IEASA issues tender to buy thirteen LNG cargoes

Argentina’s state-owned energy company IEASA has launched another LNG tender for upcoming winter demand following a recent award for 24 cargoes.

However, this time the shipments will not land at the Escobar import terminal in the Buenos Aires region. To remind, BP won 15 LNG cargoes in the first tender announced last month for deliveries to Escobar.

The new 13 shipments would go to the Bahia Blanca LNG import terminal.

US floating LNG player Excelerate Energy recently secured a contract to reactivate the FSRU-based facility from May through August.

Excelerate’s floating storage and regasification unit previously served the Bahia Blanca facility for ten years until the end of 2018. The company’s FSRU also serves the Escobar terminal, meaning that the firm will again have two vessels in Argentina.

Under the new cargo tender, the first shipment would arrive at the Bahia Blanca terminal in May, four would land in June, five in July, and the remaining three in August, according to a report by local news service Econojournal.

Combined with the first tender, IEASA would buy in total 37 LNG cargoes for the winter requirements. This compares to 33 cargoes last year.

In addition, Econojournal says that IEASA would need to secure at least 55 LNG shipments this year to meet natural gas demand during the winter.
