Germany continues with LNG fuel push

The German government continues to back LNG as fuel as part of its mobility and fuels strategy aimed at slashing emissions.

Germany’s ministry for transport and digital infrastructure (BMVI) said in a statement last week it had launched the third call for funding to shipowners looking at equipping and converting vessels to go on LNG.

Owners looking to invest in LNG as fuel can now submit their applications until June 12, 2021, BMVI said.

Depending on the size of their project, companies could receive funding of up to 60 percent of the total costs of investing in LNG propulsion, according to the ministry.

A single project can receive a maximum of 8 million euros ($9.57 million) in subsidies, it said.

To remind, the ministry said in December last year it had extended the second funding call by the end of this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The ministry said then it had granted about 30 million euros ($35.9 million) to twelve projects which included newbuild and converted LNG-powered vessels.
