Wartsila to supply navigation systems for Arctic LNG 2 vessels

A unit of Finland’s Wartsila has secured a contract to deliver radio and integrated navigation systems for ten icebreaking tankers that will serve the Novatek-operated Arctic LNG-2 project in Russia.

Wartsila Voyage secured the order in January this year. The firm, in partnership with South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries, is already working on the project.

In addition, the new contract is an extension of a deal Wartsila revealed in July last year, where the firm won a job to equip five LNG carriers with integrated bridge systems under the same project.

The additional ten carriers would, therefore, have the same solutions including Wartsila navi-radar, navi-sailor and navi-conning.

Wartsila said all the equipment installed onboard would be compliant with the requirements of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping and Bureau Veritas.

It expects the installation of the equipment to take place from 2022-2024.

The vessels will operate between the Yamal Peninsula in northwest Siberia, Russia and the main European ports, Wartsila said.

Located on the Gydan peninsula, Arctic LNG 2 includes the construction of three trains with a capacity of 6.6 mtpa, each, using gravity-based structure platforms.

Moreover, Novatek expects to launch the first LNG train in 2023, with trains 2 and 3 to follow in 2024 and 2026, respectively.

Besides operator Novatek, the project partners include Total, CNPC, CNOOC, and the consortium of Mitsui and JOGMEC.
