China Merchants yard delivers first LNG carrier to Celsius

China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) has delivered the first of six 180,000-cbm LNG carriers to Denmark’s Celsius Tankers, a unit of Celsius Shipping. This is the first LNG carrier delivery for the Chinese shipbuilder and also the first Chinese-built LNG carrier for Celsius.

The naming and delivery of Celsius Georgetown, the first 180,000-cbm LNG carrier built in China, took place on Wednesday.

In December 2022, Celsius and CMHI signed the 4+2+2 contract for 180,000-cbm LNG carriers, with deliveries scheduled for 2026 and 2027.

CMHI (Jiangsu) officially started building the first of these six 298.8-meter-long ABS-classed LNG carriers during a steel-cutting ceremony held on October 23, 2023.

Celsius chartered the first four LNG carriers to Clearlake Shipping, a subsidiary of energy trader Gunvor.

The Deltamarin-designed vessels feature Everllence ME-GA engines and GTT’s Mark III Flex containment system.

With this delivery, Celisius has 15 LNG carriers on the water and 11 LNG carriers scheduled for delivery in 2026, 2027, and 2028, its website shows.

South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries built the other 14 operational LNG carriers and will deliver six more vessels to Celsius, the data shows.

Most recently, Celisus ordered two more LNG carriers at Samsung Heavy following an order for one LNG carrier in March.

With this order, the Celsius LNG fleet expanded to 26 vessels.
