Malaysia’s Petronas wraps up first LNG delivery in ISO tanks to China

Malaysia’s Petronas said Monday it started exporting LNG to China in ISO tanks from its filling facility in Pengerang, Johor.

Petronas delivered the first shipment to Shanghai from Pasir Gudang Port of Johor on April 23, following a spot contract signed between the energy giant and Tiger Gas, a unit of Tiger Clean Energy.

“This inaugural LNG ISO tank export from Malaysia is an innovative solution that enables LNG to reach off-grid customers, not only domestically, but also internationally, extending the reach of our virtual pipeline system offering that we have started since late last year,” Petronas VP of LNG marketing and trading, Shamsairi Ibrahim, said in the statement.

The duo signed a long-term contact last year under which Petronas supplies LNG from its Bintulu plant to Tiger’s ISO tank facility on the island of Borneo.

As part of this agreement, Tiger Clean Energy will distribute Petronas’ LNG via ISO tanks in China.

According to Petronas, the first shipment sailed from Bintulu Port to the Port of Long Kou on March 25.

Following the launch of operations at Petronas’ ISO tank filling facility at Pengerang, Malaysia will now strengthen its position as an LNG ISO tank export hub, with filling facilities in West and East Malaysia, the firm said.
