US shipping and logistics company Crowley said in a statement on Thursday that these volumes provide enough energy to power about 1.2 million homes on the island for a year.
Through a multiyear partnership with Spain’s utility Naturgy, the vessel delivers LNG to the EcoElectrica power generation facility in Pemuelas, helping provide a steady supply of energy that supports homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, Crowley said.
In March 2025, American Energy delivered its first US LNG cargo to Naturgy’s facility in Penuelas.
EcoElectrica is owned by Naturgy, France’s Engie, and Japan’s Mitsui.
It has a 540 MW combined-cycle power plant that includes an LNG terminal with one 160,000 cbm tank located in Penuelas.
In addition to contributing to Puerto Rico’s energy resilience, American Energy has played a role in strengthening the US mariner workforce over the past year, Crowley said.
The vessel has employed 90 US mariners, including 16 cadets and apprentices, with nearly 20 percent from Puerto Rico, the company added.
American Energy has a capacity of 130,400 cubic meters (34.4 million gallons) per voyage, and operates in accordance with the US Coast Guard Authorization Act of 1996.
VesselsValue data shows that Crowley bought this steam LNG vessel from Stena’s Northern Marine Management in January last year.
Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in 1994, the vessel, previously known as Puteri Intan, and then renamed to just Intan, was previously part of MISC’s fleet.
Alongside its LNG carrier operations, Crowley operates a full-service cargo terminal in San Juan, supporting container ships and roll-on/roll-off barges, including two LNG-fueled vessels, along with integrated logistics services.
The company also supplies approximately 94 million gallons of LNG annually to industries across Puerto Rico from its LNG loading terminal in Penuelas and provides transportation through ISO tank containers.
