ECOnnect announced on Wednesday that it has signed an EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) agreement with Puerto Bahia to deliver the IQuay F-Class jettyless LNG transfer system.
The firm noted that the development will play an “important” role in strengthening energy security as Colombia faces declining domestic gas production and increasing reliance on flexible import solutions to balance seasonal hydropower variability.
ECOnnect did not provide the financial details.
Once fully operational, the terminal is expected to provide up to approximately 500 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), helping improve supply resilience and energy security, particularly during periods of low hydropower generation, it said.
First gas is targeted for early 2027, making fast deployment a key requirement from the outset, the company said.
By enabling LNG imports without the need for additional jetty construction, the solution “significantly” reduces offshore construction scope and limits marine intervention, helping accelerate project timelines while reducing infrastructure complexity, it said.
The F-Class system will connect a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) to Puerto Bahía’s existing receiving facilities, creating a new LNG import gateway in Cartagena Bay.
FSRU charter, Ecopetrol deal
Puerto Bahia is being developed as Colombia’s second LNG import terminal on the Caribbean coast.
Canadian firm Frontera Energy recently announced that its unit Puerto Bahia has entered into a deal with a US-based FSRU player to charter one floating storage and regasification unit which will be installed in Cartagena, Colombia.
However, Frontera did not reveal the name of the US-based company.
Based on the description, US FSRU player Excelerate Energy, which has 12 FSRUs in its fleet, could be the FSRU owner.
The company also entered into a take-or-pay agreement with Colombia’s state-owned energy firm Ecopetrol to provide integrated logistics and LNG regasification services.
According to Frontera, the agreement with Ecopetrol is to be developed in two phases, with initial regasification of 126 MMcfd starting in 2027, increasing to 300 MMcfd after the first two years.
