Shell delivers carbon-neutral US LNG cargo to Europe

Energy giant Shell has recently delivered a carbon-neutral LNG cargo from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass facility in the US to Europe.

Cheniere said in a statement on Tuesday that Sabine Pass supplied the cargo as part of Shell’s long-term LNG offtake deal. Shell delivered the shipment to Europe in early April.

The duo worked together to offset the full lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions associated with the LNG cargo by retiring nature-based offsets to account for the estimated CO2e emissions produced through the entire value chain, Cheniere said.

Furthermore, this includes emission from production through use by the final consumer, it said.

The duo used offsets purchased from Shell’s global portfolio of nature-based projects.

In addition, Cheniere bought the portion “attributable to estimated CO2e emissions associated with activities upstream of the FOB delivery point, including production and liquefaction,” the firm said.

Earlier this year, Cheniere revealed plans to provide its LNG customers with GHG emissions data associated with each cargo produced at its Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi liquefaction facilities.

The firm aims to start this in the first half of 2022.
