KBR scores JX Nippon carbon capture contract

Houston-based engineer KBR has won a carbon capture contract from Japan’s JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Corporation.

Under the master service agreement and feasibility study, KBR will assess options for carbon capture and sequestration. The deal also includes assesing blue hydrogen production relating to JX Nippon’s oil and gas fields in Southeast Asia.

JX Nippon’s offshore fields in Malaysia and Indonesia are both feeding liquefied natural gas export facilities. These include the Bintulu LNG plant and the Tangguh export facility.

KBR will provide technical consultancy services by developing concepts and recommendations for CO2 capture, reinjection, and production of blue hydrogen.

In addition, the engineering company will look into the feasibility of conversion and transport of hydrogen in other forms for sale into the market.

These include liquified cryogenic hydrogen, liquid organic hydrogen carrier, ammonia, and methanol.

This project will be led primarily from KBR’s consulting hub in Singapore. It will be leveraging on the specialist skills of its wider strategic and advisory consulting and engineering groups.

Jay Ibrahim, KBR president of energy solutions said the company was “excited” take to part in this project.

The project is “indicative of the global transition to more sustainable energy supplies,” he said.
