Three new LNG-powered bulkers to get MAN ME-GI engines

China’s New Times Shipbuilding has ordered MAN ME-GI engines for three LNG-powered dry bulk carriers the yard is building for Singapore’s Eastern Pacific Shipping.

To remind, EPS said earlier this month it had signed a deal to charter up to six LNG-powered dry bulk carriers to mining giant Rio Tinto.

New Times will build three 210,000-dwt bulk carriers, but there is an option for an additional three.

Furthermore, CSSC-MES Diesel (CMD) will construct the MAN B&W 6G70ME-GI engines ordered by the yard in China, Germany’s MAN said in a statement on Wednesday.

The new contract comes after MAN received an order for ME-GI dual-fuel engines in October 2020 in connection with the construction of five 210,000-dwt Newcastlemax bulk carriers, again for EPS.

These vessels will go on charter to Australian mining giant BHP for a period of five years.

MAN says that its low-speed, dual-fuel references now exceed 374 units, with the ME-GI recording over 1.6 million operating hours on LNG alone.
