Sparrows bags Australian LNG contract from Chevron

Aberdeen-based energy services firm Sparrows has won a contract from a unit of Chevron to work on the latter’s two giant LNG projects in Australia.

Under the contract with Chevron Australia, Sparrows will support the safety and reliability of Chevron’s onshore and offshore lifting operations at both Gorgon and Wheatstone LNG projects, it said in a statement.

The firm will provide inspection and maintenance services for cranes and lifting equipment.

The “significant” award, which marks Sparrows first large contract in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, will see the company hire local personnel including lifting engineers, mechanical and electrical technicians, rope access, inspectors, and crane supervisors.

Sparrows did not reveal the price tag of the contract.

Chevron’s giant Gorgon project includes a 15.6 mtpa LNG facility on Barrow Island while the Wheatstone plant located west of Onslow has the capacity to produce 8.9 mtpa.

However, Chevron said earlier this year it had managed to boost incremental capacity at the Gorgon plant by 5 percent and the Wheatstone facility by 9 percent.
